Pound for pound, this has been one of the best weeks for new Android gaming releases in months, with a huge variety of experiences on offer. There's The Procession to Calvary, a completely unique point-and-click adventure game channelling Monty Python, an interactive take on George Orwell's Animal Farm, and the first mobile spin-off of League of Legends, one of the most influential games of the last decade.

There are some cracking sales on the go, too – though you'll need to fork out quite a lot to take advantage of all of them.

The Procession to Calvary

The term 'Python-esque' is bandied about a lot, but rarely is it more aptly deployed than in the case of The Procession to Calvary, Joe Richardson's marvellous point-and-click adventure game set just after the holy wars. The backdrops are taken from renaissance artworks, the is music is sampled from classical composers, and there's a strain of gory humor throughout.

Orwell's Animal Farm

Ever wondered how you might have done things differently from Napoleon and his porcine comrades if you had found yourself leading a communist revolution on Manor Farm? Me neither. Even so, Orwell's Animal Farm is a fascinating and highly playable interactive take on George Orwell's allegorical novel, giving you the chance to see whether power really does corrupt.

Forager

Forager is the classic rags to gamejam to riches story. A true labor of love, it sees you foraging and crafting on a small island, gradually adding to the list of stuff you can make and expanding your territory. It makes for a perfect mobile port, thanks to its accessible and streamlined approach to the genre. An easy recommendation.

League of Legends: Wild Rift

While it's not 'out' out, League of Legends: Wild Rift is now available throughout Europe in open beta. That means you can play it right now. So far the response to this first mobile spin-off of Riot Games's MOBA classic has been positive, but, alas, gamers in North America will have to wait a little longer to try it out.

Drawn to Life: Two Realms

A full decade after the last Drawn to Life game came out we've been treated to Drawn to Life: Two Realms. It uses the same basic premise as the DS original, but adds a comprehensive creation tool to let you customize your experience. It costs half as much on mobile as it does on the big-screen platforms, too.

Old Man's Journey is a widely acclaimed, multiple award-winning indie game about a man of advancing years going for a walk. The clever part is that you control the landscape rather than the old man, moving hills and other features to create paths for him to follow, bending the laws of physics and perspective in a manner reminscent of Monument Valley.

9th Dawn III is just a good old-fashioned monster-busting, loot-hoarding, dungeon-crawling hack-and-slash action-RPG. Its recent vintage might explain its usual price tag of $29.99 – a truly eye-watering sum on mobile. But you can pick it up right now for 'just' $9.99.

Old Man's Journey is the story of a salt-weathered old sea captain living in a coastal cabin atop a steep cliff. One day, the Old Man is delivered a letter that inspires him to set out on a pilgrimage across the countryside. He travels towards his unnamed destination by foot, train, truck, and boat, while the player is tasked with guiding the Old Man through colorful landscapes by rearranging the hills to create connected paths.

While there's no tutorial, the system is intuitive and the puzzles are straightforward without being repetitive or boring. Natural surfaces like hills and cliffs are movable, but concrete, metal, or stone surfaces provide an immobile framework for every level. In the playful world of Old Man's Journey, waterfalls become slides and quaint ponds become portals to creative underwater levels, where the player must move aside old sunken ships to unveil the path ahead. The gameplay is delightfully consistent while throwing in interesting variations; under the player's guidance, the Old Man opens vaults, connects train tracks, and herds sheep.

At the end of each level, the Old Man stops to take a rest. While he settles in on a bench, chair, or a nice flat rock, the camera pans out to give the player a better view of the surrounding landscape. The aesthetic of every level is pleasing to the eye, and the cute art and expressive characters call to mind a children's picture book combined with the interactive nature that makes video games a unique and influential medium. To use the words of the developers, Old Man's Journey is 'beautifully sunkissed' and 'meditatively delightful.'

As the rich colors of the backgrounds in Old Man's Journey soak through the screen, the Old Man begins to reminisce. The screen fades and we get small snippets of his past through intricate flashback images.

The story is wordless, but clear.

As a young (handsome) man, our protagonist found the love of his life and started a family with her. But despite the romance of their connection, his passion for life on the sea couldn't be quelled.

While the puzzles grow slightly more complex as the journey goes on, they never bring the player to a point of frustration. What did frustrate me, though, was the plot of Old Man's Journey. I found myself guessing from the beginning that his journey would have a sad ending, and I was frustrated with the base premise of the game. This poor old man is walking across the countryside (most likely towards a less than fantastic fate), regretting the decisions he's made in life that have taken him away from the family he once had.

From that perspective, the message is clear: don't gamble the things you already have on a dream.

But from the viewpoint of a twenty-something struggling with the idea of finding my life's greatest 'passions,' the message turns sour. What I see is a man that has an unshakeable love for sailing, but is unable to compromise to ensure that both sailing and his family remain in his life.

They want players to take note of the Old Man's mistakes, in hopes of helping us avoid making those same mistakes in our own lives.
